is an untraditional photographer in the sense that she does not document things she sees as others do. In her series titled, Limbo, her photographs are taken on a set, or atleast altered by the artist. The situation she has set up is imaginary, and is more for the artistic value and meaning as opposed to an anthropologic project.

The models are dressed and posed abstractly which forces the viewer to draw their own conclusions about what Bianca Brunner was trying to get across in her photographs.

The photographer, Nan Goldin first got her start documenting the new music scene,shooting mostly in the Village of New York City. They resemble snapshots and mostly, the subjects are using drugs, and acting violently. Some of her photos are autobiographical self-portraits. One detail that made her photographs extremely influential was the rate of fatality amongst her subjects. By the 1990's most of her subjects had died from AIDS or a drug overdose. The New York Times pointed out its impact, stating that Nan Goldin had "forged a genre, with photography as influential as any in the last twenty years."

Nan Goldin's work is traditionally organized into a slideshow, and entered at film festivals. The most well known film was 800 pictures and 45 minutes long. Goldin photographs girls in bathrooms and women looking in mirrors, some say it is like a "private journal made public," similar to the objective of The Girl Project.

What most speaks to her are people or places that she refers to as "hidden, ignored, or misunderstood." Markova-Gold's main objective is to bring light to problems that may promote affirmative action. Tiana Markova-Gold works in color film, using only natural light. Much of her subject matter contains drugs, sex, and violence as shown by her documentary work featuring the lives of a prostitutes in NYC

Something special and horrifying about her photographs is that they are not staged or posed, she does not even use any extra lighting or equipment; how we see it, is how it is. Sometimes she records conversations with her subjects to include in the project. In her Haiti photographs, she depicts the environment of Haiti, and shows how even one of the most unpolished areas, still can be beautiful.

Linda McCartney photographed artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Who, Neil Young, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Simon and Garfunkel, The Doors, Grace Slick, and Eric Clapton. The photo of Clapton was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, making her the first female photographer to be on Rolling Stone's cover. She famously was photographed on the cover of Rolling Stone with Paul in 1968, making her the only person to have been both photographed and to have taken a photograph for the cover.

Some of McCartney's photographs were exhibited in over 50 international galleries. She also published a book entitled, Linda McCartney's Sixties: Portrait of an Era.

Eve Arnold was born in 1912 and was the first female member of the Magnum Photo agency in 1951. She is still an important and active figure on British photography at 97 years old. Arnold's claim to fame come from her photographs of Marilyn Monroe, continuously coming for over a decade. The reason for the strength of her photographs of Marilyn is due to the amount of trust that they shared. Arnold and Marilyn were friends, and had a close relationship which showed. Her key to success was being able to show the intimacy through her photographs and capturing the closeness with Marilyn that was unattainable by any other photographer. Eve Arnold did not just photograph Marilyn Monroe, she did photojournalism (China, Russia, South Africa, Afghanistan to name a few), and also captured Queen Elizabeth II, and Malcolm X, and a series on many president's wives.

If there’s one thing I’ve read which seems to sum up the brilliance of Arnold’s photos, it’s this quote from the artist herself: “If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.”

Ok I lied. No one can top Coco Rocha but
Karlie is definitely in my top five.
The girl is only 16 (!!!) and can take fierce photographs. Her eyes are so intense I feel like she could knock me down with her death stare. I want her to smile more though- she is so cute when she smiles. I think if she keeps going, she could be the next Kate Moss. She really has a unique face, she's not trendy or outspoken- she does her job very well and doesn't get into trouble. When Kate started out she was this little quiet girl who had a quirky and innocent face. She wasn't like the Supers who prowled down the runway and were always in the tabloids. Kate learned how to model well and she didn't overshadow the clothes but you always noticed her. I think Karlie has some of the same characteristics- she's sweet, she is a natural at modeling and she doesn't want fame; she just want to do the job right and go home.
I can't wait to see what she does when she's in her twenties.

He has captured my heart with his photographs.

I don't really care about what he looks like (or I couldn't find a photo of him on Google Images) or where he is from (why doesn't he have a Wikipedia page?) or whether he likes animals. All I care about is his eye for beautiful photographs.

Paul has shot many a model such as Tanya D; he has shot ads for Kookai and George Cross and has photographed the band Silverchair.

What I love about his photos is his use of colour- neon yellows, muted pinks, soft blues: They all create a mood. The models seem more alive and vivid; they really stand out and are hard to forget.

One of my favorite photos is of a model lying in a bed under a glow of yellow. She is half dressed, the bed sheets are messy and she is twisting a strand of hair through her fingers. It feels like you just caught her just after pleasuring a man (or herself.) Simply unforgettable

Fashion illustration is a newly discovered love of mine. I've been re-reading In Vogue, a delicious coffee table book that traces the history of the magazine. Before photographs became the essence of fashion, illustrators would capture the fashions of the day. Instead of Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Horst P. Horst and Irving Penn, there was Georges Lepape, Helen Dryden, Eduardo Benito and George Plank, to name a few. Their illustrations conveyed the news, which was anything that was happening in style and culture. The styles varied dramatically as the artists were influenced by art deco, expressionism, fauvism and cubism among others.. Around the 1030s, magazine sales began to drop and they saw the need for more service-oriented covers (with headlines) and less artistic ones.

Although photographs were used in magazines in the 20s, they didn't make covers until the 1930s.

Now, fashion illustration barely exists with the exception of sporadic drawings by Ruben Toledo who draws those fabulous Nordstrom ads and draws accessories for Harper's Bazaar.

Last year I discovered UK-based fashion illustrator David Downton, who recently started publishing a fashion illustration magazine called Pourquoi Pas?

Boo Ritson’s

artworks are generally pretty short-lived creations achieved using house paint and a flesh canvas that are captured in photographs before the paint washes off her subjects and her masterpiece disappears. Employing regular house paint she has recently been inspired to transform people into thickly-daubed Hollywood stereotypes – depicting Sunset Boulevard hookers, eager starlets and heavy duty police officers.

Her photographer Andy Crawford is the vital link in preserving the evidence. The main difficulty with her process is that she only has roughly 20 minutes to create her masterpieces before the paint dries, only she and her photographer ever see the work in its raw form. The idea to use people instead of canvas came to her one Christmas. She put on a shower cap and goggles, splashed herself in some old house paint and had her husband take a picture. “I just couldn’t stop looking at the image, " she says. "The next day was Christmas Day, which was rather annoying because we had all our family over. Then Boxing Day came and I painted my husband and took his photo, and the two of them side-by-side just worked." We caught up with her to find out why it's never stopped working...

Italian-born, London-based artist he has created a series of haunting portraits by embroidering over found photography, isolating relatable orifices (eyes and mouth) and using them as focal points for his pattern overlays. The effect is one of dreams, appearing as masks — grotesque avian ids — uniting the subjects under an outré anthropological guise. “The intimate human action of embroidery is a ritual of making and reshaping stories and the history of these people,” he says.

I work with sewing, embroidery and drawing to explore the essence of signs in their physical manifestation. I take inspiration from my own personal experience and observation of how, in other cultures, bodies themselves are treated as living graphic symbols. I then use sewing and embroidery in a further attempt to re-signify, and mark the space with a man-made sign, a trace. I am interested in people’s stories and histories, and the relation between intimacy and the outer world. I have been working with hair for the past few years. I stitch and sew hair together until it becomes a sculpture. I see hair as a metaphorical medium to represent bodily boundaries, the embodiment of space.’ Maurizio Anzeri

Anika Lori’s art is layered with history, emotion, and a great deal of symbolism. The Danish based artist became noticed for her vibrant collages but has more recently began to develop her paintings and sculptures. You can see examples of Lori’s sculpture work below in her reinterpretations of the Matrioshka dolls. Anika Lori’s work has a tendency of punctutating oragnic concepts and ideas with bold graphic lines and shapes, a contrast which is very signifying to her style. I also really like how she uses the graphic shapes to create, whats seems like little alternate worlds which live within each shape.
